DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Mark Twain wrote, in The Refuge of the Derelicts, that “Every man is a moon and has a side which he turns toward nobody: you have to slip around behind if you want to see it.”
Stevenson’s classic asks: What is the nature of good and evil and is it possible to excise the one from the other? Hatcher’s adaptation takes this question a step further and asks if an ‘evil’ man can find redemption while the ‘good’ man takes a moral plunge. Hatcher admits that most of his plays have something to do with the slippery notion of identity and multifaceted personality. How interesting for us that there are four Hydes upon the stage and one of them female! We must ‘slip around behind’ all of these characters to find their hidden sides and to find out what strange and violent urges bubble under their carefully crafted Victorian facades.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, was first published in 1886 to immediate success. There have been many film and stage adaptations in the intervening 128 years though none, perhaps, as inventive and theatrical as tonight’s enthralling performance. Many thanks to those who have contributed their amazing talents to this production. I like to watch!
