The play calls for Looking for 18 men or women in total - Ages 17 to 65

All men cast in the play will require an army haircut.

Rehearsal nights: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
There will be no rehearsals during the high school March Break.

There are 28 roles to fill, from age 9 to age 90!

All is not quiet in the Jungle of Nool, as Horton the Elephant finds himself standing guard over an abandoned egg, while at the same time trying to save the tiny world of the Whos. This one act musical, filled with your favourite whimsical characters, including Gertrude McFuzz, The Wickersham Brothers,
a very sour Kangaroo, and one very mischievous cat, is sure to please the young and young at heart.

Characters:

The Cat (M/F) - 16-30yrs

- Host and Master of Ceremonies for the production.
- Ability to present multiple characters (sometime at the same time)
- Ability to balance on a ball while juggling two books, a cake and a rake, while holding
a fishbowl (complete with goldfish) in his/her tail is not necessary (but highly desirable).

Horton (M) - 18+ (tenor/baritone)

- Horton is big . . . big hearted, big boned, and big imagination.
- Even when rushing, Horton is slow.

Gertrude (F) - 16+ (soprano)

- The shy and quiet next door neighbour, lacking any sense of self confidence
- She is "smitten" with Horton, and struggle to get him to notice her.

Mayzie (F) - (20+) (soprano/alto)

- Mayzie is a brash, outgoing, and care-free character.
- She's a star, she knows it, and isn't going to pass up a chance to flaunt it.
- Think "Vegas Showgirl"

The Sour Kangaroo (f) - (18+) (soprano/alto)

- She is to the Jungle of Nool, what the Queen of Hearts is to Wonderland.
- A commanding physical presence, but also requires some comic skills as the
"baby kangaroo" will consist of a 'hand puppet'

Bird Girls (F) - (14+) (soprano/alto)

- Mayzie's "fan club" - a real clique of followers
- Think "Vegas Showgirl *chorus*"

Wickersham Brothers (M)

(2@9-12, 2@12-16, 1@16+) (mixed ranges)
- the "bad boys" of the Jungle
- athletic, tumbling, and aggressive

Vlad Vladikoff (M) (20+) (any range)

- Vlad of the Russian crime syndicate.
- An imposing and bordering "scary" creature

Jojo Who (M/F) (12+) (soprano/alto)

- A square peg living in a community of round holes.
- Proves that you do not have to conform in order to fit in.

The Mayor (M) (24+) (tenor/baritone)

- A well meaning father who just can't grasp that his son is "different"

Performance dates: February 1^st through February 12^th, 2011

Rehearsals will, in the most part, be Sunday. Tuesday and Thursday, but there may be some changes
to accommodate use of the Playhouse in November/December. There will be a 2 week hiatus
in rehearsals from Dec 21st until Jan 2nd to accommodate the festive period.

The format of the auditions will involve no prior learning but will require reading of
certain selected passages to have characters inter-react with each other.

Characters:
(Five characters, all women).

Jenny is the Madam and the owner of the brothel. She is in her midthirties or forties and has seen life. She is the business manager but does still turn the occasional trick for "special" clients!

Anita is a young bubble head who has no education . . . but aspires to one. Her head is fairly easily turned, especially when promised a new start in life and an improvement in her status. She is in her early 20's but could be a teenager as well.

Frances is the old whore. She drinks too much, smokes too much and has a really jaundiced view of life. Her clientele has fallen off and she barely makes enough to justify being kept on by Jenny. She is in her 40's (they didn't live that long back then) but could be older.

Natalie is a sweet, smart, well educated girl from "back east" who has been kicked out of her house by her husband and has arrived in Baxter Springs, Kansas with no visible means of support. As she has no profession, she decides to make her living at the oldest one, but finds she has no talent for that either. What she does have talent for is the "managerial" side and she actively lobbies to take over the business. She is in her late 20's or thirties.

Clara is the wronged wife whose husband has been availing himself of the services of the house! She is probably in her 50's or 60's but the age is negotiable.

This is the opening play of the 2010-2011 KT season. To reduce the time commitment over the
summer, we will cast the show in early May, hold a read-through shortly after that, and send the
cast members away with homework. Rehearsals will begin in early August, the expectation being that
all will be off-book by then.

The play is a study in the relationships across three generations of a family. The upcoming birth of a fourth-generation baby into this dysfunctional family brings many issues to a head.

Characters:

Carolyn Bingham:       Very pregnant, opinionated and kind (age: 20s to early 30s)
Michel Charbonneau: Carolyn’s live-in boyfriend, must speak French Canadian
                                     and English with an accent (age: 20s to early 30s)
Jane Bingham:           Carolyn’s mother, elegant (early 40s to mid 50s)
Bill Bingham:             Carolyn’s father, successful, emotionally repressed
                                    (early 40s to mid 50s)
Russell Bingham:     Carolyn’s grandfather, grumpy yet caring and attentive (60s +)
Dawn:                        Carolyn’s midwife

Auditions for: The Taming of the Shrew

This is a rollicking comedy, bordering on farce. There will be some song and, who knows,
maybe some dance. There are at least 15 speaking parts of various sizes ranging from one line to many. Ages are flexible. If you are any age from your teens on up you can audition for this play.

If you cannot make it on one of the above two auditions dates, not to worry! Just call me (see contact information below) and I will arrange an alternative. I expect to take much of June to complete the casting. Rehearsals proper will not start until September, but I do want to hold a number of table readings during the summer beginning as soon as casting is announced.

The edited script is now available. Call me and I will get you one.

Although we will do a bit of “cold” reading, auditioners for all male parts will be asked to read Petruchio’s speech in Act 2 Scene 1 line 166 beginning: “I pray you do. I’ll attend her here- . . . .” and ending: “. . . Myself am moved to woo thee for my wife.” Women will be asked to read Katherina’s speech Act 2 Scene 1 line 136 beginning “Fie, fie, unknit that threatening unkind brow . . . .”
If you have a prepared audition piece you may, if you wish, perform it.

This production will be influenced by the styles of the 1960s.
There will be some song and maybe some dance.

Production dates are November 9 to November 20, 2010.

Characters:

Katharina Minola of Padua - "Kate", the "shrew", unmanageable and therefor unmarriageable

*Bianca, her younger sister, a bit self absorbed.

*Baptista Minola, the overly protective father of Kate and Bianca.

Petruchio, Kate's suitor, a brash adventurer and fortune seeker.

*Grumio, (Grumia?) his servant.

Hortensio, Bianca's suitor, a bit thick, a bit of a loser.

Gremio, a wealthy older man, another suitor of Bianca, with little aptitude for romance,
but great potential as a sugar-daddy.

Lucentio, from Pisa, another suitor of Bianca, eventually her husband, an idealistic university
student, a seeker of knowledge, easily distracted by the siren call of the flesh.

Tranio, Lucentio's companion, a cunning schemer, familiar with the ways of the world.

*Biondello (Biondella?) another of Lucentio's servants.

Vincentio, Lucentio's rich father from Pisa, a late and unsuspecting arrival.

A Pedant, or supposed schoolmaster, inveigled into impersonating Vincentio.

*Curtis a an employee of Petruchio

*A rich widow, resorted to by Hortensio when his stock with Bianca falls.

*A tailor,

*A haberdasher,

*Extras, singers, students, wedding guests etc.

The parts marked with an asterisk * are either women's roles or roles for which I will consider women.
