Properties (Props)
Props are things carried on and off stage by the actors, as
opposed
to furnishings that stay on stage or are moved by the stage crew.
Sometimes the distinction is not obvious. A Props person is
responsible for procuring the props, either from KT’s inventory
or from outside sources. During a performance, she must ensure
that the props are in the right place at the right time so that the
actor can easily find them. She is also responsible for ensuring
that all borrowed or rented props are returned to their owners.
Properties assistants are often employed for shows requiring a
large number of props.
Furnishings
Furniture and other items on the set are the responsibility
of
Furnishings. In consultation with the Director and the Set
Designer, she chooses the style and colour of items. She then
searches for a source and arranges to find, borrow, rent or build
them. She is also responsible for ensuring that borrowed or rented
items are delivered and returned safely.
Costume Coordinator
In consultation with the Director, the Costume Coordinator
determines the costumes that are required for each actor. The
choice of style and colour is an essential ingredient in the staging
of the play. Directors vary in the degree of input they wish to
have in the costuming so it is important there is a good rapport
between the Costumes Coordinator and the Director. She must
then procure the costumes. These may either be found in KT’s
extensive costume room, supplied by the actor, purchased from
new or used clothing stores or made. Having procured, fitted and
altered the costumes as necessary, she must then organize the
dressers so that the costume changes work smoothly. She is also
responsible for cleaning and mending the costumes. For a large-
scale production, the Costume Coordinator cannot possibly do
all the work herself so she will delegate much of it to her team of
assistants, seamstresses and dressers.
Costumes Assistant
A great deal of time is spent driving around the city
searching for
costumes at second hand clothing stores. Costumes Assistants
who are willing to take on this task are very much appreciated.
