Production Crew Functions (cont'd)

Set Painter

The painting of the set is often a huge task requiring many painters
working in a limited period of time. Usually the skills required
are simple, although some techniques are quite challenging.
Colour blindness is not considered an asset. The Set Painters work under the direction of the Set Designer.

Set Decor

The Set Decorator procures those items of the set that are not
constructed or painted on the set such as pictures, curtains and
wall ornaments. Set Decor does not include furniture on the set
although the distinction is sometimes unclear. Set Decor is
generally under the supervision of the Set Designer.

Lighting Design

Lighting is a major part of the “staging” of the production. The
Director, in consultation with the Set Designer, the Lighting
Designer and the Costume Designer, develops an overall concept
for the style and look of play. Within this concept, the Lighting
Designer plans the installation and focusing of the lights, the
colours and the sequence of lighting changes. He supervises the
Lighting Assistants in the hanging and focusing of the lights.
During rehearsals, he develops the lighting plot and adjusts the
settings so that action and the lighting work together to produce
the optimum dramatic effect. He then programs the lighting
console and works with the Stage Manager to coordinate cues
for lighting changes. He may also be responsible for recruiting
and training Lighting Operators.

Lighting Operator

During a performance, the Lighting Operator controls all the stage
lighting from the lighting console in the control booth. He takes
his cues as required from the Stage Manager. As well as simply
running the pre-programmed sequence, he should have enough
knowledge of the system to handle unexpected problems. He also
controls the house lights, the corridor lights and the fluorescent
lights.
